Insights from the Center’s latest Draft Report

Indian pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry’s face a rapidly evolving policy environment. Recent changes in the intellectual property regime, price controls, debates about compulsory licensing and other discussions of access to medicines place Indian firms squarely in the global eye. In the midst of this international attention, Indian firms have continued to be important players in providing low-cost access to medicines and other technologies needed around the world and are now focusing on expanding their reach to new products and regions.

India’s Role in Solving the Curious Case of Diagnostics

Reflections on the recent conference in India on developing affordable diagnostics

Compared to drugs and vaccines, diagnostics are often overlooked as a critical health technology. Even though they don’t directly treat disease or confer immunization, they play a number of important roles in controlling disease. Some of these roles were pointed out at the “International Conference on Technological Challenges in Developing Affordable In-Vitro Molecular Diagnostics” which took place in Navi Mumbai this past week. The conference brought together top academics, policymakers and companies from within and outside India to discuss the latest advancements in diagnostics research.

Beyond ACTs: what medicines will it take to eradicate malaria?

Today, in 2011, we are a far cry from the empty malaria medicine pipeline of the 1990s. There are two WHO-prequalified artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) available (artemether/lumefantrine and artesunate/amodiaquine) and two more due to be launched in 2012 (Eurartesim® [dihydroartemisinin/piperaquine] from sigma-tau Industrie Farmaceutiche Riunite and Medicines for Malaria Venture [MMV] and Pyramax® [pyronaridine/artesunate] from Shin-Poong Pharmaceuticals and MMV). Additionally, we now have a WHO-prequalified treatment for severe malaria at our disposal.
